It was previously known as non-insulin dependent mellitus (NIDDM) or adult onset diabetes. It doesn’t occur in younger people. It can be controlled with proper diet, weight loss and exercise.

Natural Cure and Alternative Medicine

Bitter Gourd (Karela):

Bitter gourd Momordica-charantia or bitter melon juice contains plant insulin and should be taken 2 ounce 2 times daily on an empty stomach. It is found to be very effective for diabetes.
Gymnema Sylvestre a traditional ayurvedic herb the leaf of which is to be taken up to 4 grams per day.

Turmeric and Gooseberry:

Use of turmeric and gooseberry in equal quantities in powder form taken with warm water is very useful in this behalf. These activate the pancreatic cells and more insulin is produced.
Taking half a teaspoon of cinnamon a day may help prevent the onset of diabetes. Even soaking a cinnamon sticks in your tea, could also benefit non-diabetics who have blood sugar problem but are unaware of it.

Guided Imagery:

This is a technique that helps to relax the body and mind. Here peaceful images are used to make one aware of pain, and bring out the ability of the body to deal with it.

Acupuncture:

This involves inserting needles at certain points in the body to get the body to release natural painkillers to lessen the pain.
Magnesium:

This is a mineral which controls sugar levels in the body. It is seen that diabetics have lower levels of magnesium. This could suggest that by supplementing magnesium one can control diabetes also.

Ginseng:

American Ginseng is believed to have the ability to reduce glucose levels. Ginseng is available in many varieties and strengths. It has not been established as to what strength and amount would have therapeutic effects. Hence this has not been established as cure for diabetes.

Exercise

Our bodies are the only machines on the face of this earth that break down, get worn out, and simply start deteriorating through the lack of exercise. This is especially true for aiding in the cure of diabetes.

Exercise not only lowers your blood sugar levels, but it also lowers your risk of heart disease – which is common for people who have been unfortunate enough to develop diabetes.

Yoga

Yoga can help a lot. To relieve stress do meditation once a day for 10 to 40 minutes. Yogic asanas like Siddhasana, Vajrasana, Talasana, and Yastikasana, like Yogamudra, Hastapadasana, Paschimottanasana, Chakrasana, Ustrasana, Bhujangasana, Sarvangasana and Viparitakarani, as halasana, shalabhasana, dhanurasana, Pratipaksabhavana and shavasana will also be beneficial.
